Ocean Engineering Courses such as Naval Architecture & Offshore Engineering, Petroleum Engineering and Coastal & Ocean Engineering are the application of scientific methods for the benefit of the mankind. The School of Ocean Engineering under VELS UNIVERSITY is providing very good education and the courses are designed according to the need of the industries which are related to Ocean Engineering. As such VELS UNIVERSITY has the obligation and commitment to provide education right from DIPLOMA to Ph.D ( ie. Diploma,Degree, Post Graduate Degree and Research) level. The School of Ocean Engineering will be providing an excellent education for the students through teaching and learning, practices and training, research and service to the community. In addition to regular curricula, the students are taught additional subjects like communication skills and soft skills to make them ready for the industry. The students have to undergo Internship/ Training in various ocean related industries including Shipyards, Design offices, Offshore companies, Ports and Harbors, Oil and Gas industries to get good acquaintance about the field where they are likely to work. Apart from this, International/ National Conferences, Seminars, Workshops, Special lectures by eminent people will be arranged for the benefit of the students.

B Tech in Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering / Diploma in Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering This course prepares Naval Architects and Offshore Engineers to meet the demand of the manpower required for the industry by imparting knowledge on basic science subjects and common engineering subjects.

The core subjects syllabus are Basics of Naval Architecture, Theory of Ships, Theory of Structures, Resistance and Propulsion of Ships, Strength of Ships, Wave hydro dynamics, Marine Design, Ship Production, Fundamentals of Offshore Structures, Advanced Offshore Engineering, Elements of Geo-technical Engineering, Structural Design of Ships and Offshore Structures, Sea keeping and controllability of ships and offshore structures, Marine Engineering and Marine Electrical Technology, Finite Element Analysis, Quality Health Safety and Environmental Management, Production and Project Management, IMO codes, Classification of Society Rules, Ship & Offshore Design Calculations methods and Drawing & drafting both manually and in Autocad. Apart from this, the students have to undergo internship/ training in Ship yard/ Offshore companies. They are also taught software such as Aveva Marine, DnV Sesam, Napa, PDMS, Sacs, Primavera, Hard Dollar etc for designing of ships and offshore structures, project management and cost estimation. In addition to this, the students have to do practicals in the Labs, Ship in Campus and Workshops. In this way the students are fully equipped to face any challenges in the Industry.
A Naval Architect is a professional Engineer who is responsible for the design, construction and repair of ships, boats, other marine vessels and offshore structures, both civil and military, including, :Merchant ships - Oil/Gas Tankers, Cargo Ships, Cruise Liners, etc. Passenger/Vehicle Ferries, Warships - Frigates, Destroyers, Aircraft Carriers, Amphibious Ships, etc, Submarines and underwater vehicles, Offshore Drilling Platforms, Semi Submersibles, FPSOs High Speed Craft - Hovercraft, Multi-Hull Ships, Hydrofoil Craft, etc Workboats - Fishing Vessels, Tugs, Pilot Vessels, Rescue Craft etc. Yachts, Power Boats and other recreational craft Modern engineering practice is essentially a team activity conducted by professional engineers in their respective fields and disciplines. However, it is the Naval Architect who integrates their activities and takes ultimate responsibility for the overall project. This demanding leadership role requires managerial qualities and ability to bring together the often conflicting demands of the various professional engineering disciplines. The Naval Architect must have an understanding of various branches of engineering and must be in the forefront of high technology areas. A Naval Architect requires a creative, enquiring and logical mind; ability to communicate clearly in speech and writing with various professionals and authorities, sound judgment and qualities of leadership. This type of education and training is designed to develop those skills that recognizes the qualifications and professional status. Naval Architects have a wide range of employment opportunities, both inland and abroad. They are involved in such a wide variety of work that it is difficult to categorize it comprehensively. However, the main areas are as follows: Design, Construction and Repair, Consultancy, Marketing and Sales, Operations Regulation, Surveying and Overseeing Research and Development Education and Training. The diploma holders will be assisting the Naval Architects in their day to day activities and will be working as subordinates more like supervisors.
B Tech in Petroleum Engineering/Diploma in Petroleum Engineering This course prepares Petroleum Engineers to meet the demand of the manpower required by the industry by imparting knowledge on basic science subjects and common engineering subjects for understanding the core subjects. The core subjects taught for this course are Principles of Petroleum Engineering, Petroleum Geosciences, Reservoir Rocks & fluids, Mechanics of fluids and solids, Electronics and Instrumentation, Reservoir Engineering, Drilling Operations and equipments, Natural Gas Engineering, Oil and Gas evaluation, Production operations and equipments, Heat and Mass transfer, Petroleum Environmental studies, Enhanced oil recovery, Reservoir modelling and simulation, Petrochemical and refining engineering, Marine Engineering, Onshore and Offshore engineering techniques, Principles of Management, Hazards Management, Project Management, Production in chemical and oil field, Petroleum Storage and Transportation and IT application in Petroleum industry. In addition to this the students have to do practical work in the labs and do Workshop Practices. In this way the students are fully equipped to face any challenges in Petroleum Industry. Petroleum engineers search the world for reservoirs containing oil or natural gas. Once these resources are discovered, petroleum engineers work with geologists and other specialists to understand the geologic formation and properties of the rock containing the reservoir, determine the drilling methods to be used, and monitor drilling and production operations. They design equipment and processes to achieve the maximum profitable recovery of oil and gas. Petroleum engineers rely heavily on computer models to simulate reservoir performance using different recovery techniques. They also use computer models for simulations of the effects of various drilling options. Similarly, developing the latest machines and equipments which can be used in the extraction and processing of oil is part of the job of a petroleum engineer. After gaining a qualification in petroleum engineering, the engineers work in the exploration and production activities of petroleum and other related products. Production is not the only work carried out in a petroleum company. Refining process is crucial for an oil product. Career prospects are quite attractive in petroleum sector as petroleum companies have great influence and offer attractive salaries to employees. The demand for petroleum and petroleum products is only expected to increase and the increase would lead to creation of new jobs. In fact, there is great demand of efficient petroleum engineers and almost every young graduate in petroleum engineering gets a job offer from petrol and gas companies from India and overseas. Whereas private petroleum companies offer attractive salaries to petroleum engineers, government sector oil companies are not far behind in terms of paying attractive salaries and bonus to employees. B Tech in Coastal and Ocean Engineering/Diploma in Coastal and Ocean Engineering This course prepares Coastal and ocean Engineers to meet the demand of the manpower required for the industry by imparting knowledge on basic science subjects and common engineering subjects for understanding the core subjects. The core subjects taught are Introduction to Coastal and Offshore technology, Wave Hydrodynamics, Materials for marine environment, Dynamics of floating bodies, Oceanography, Applied Coastal Hydraulics, Hydraulics machinery, Theory of Coastal Surveying, Basics of dredging technology, Design of Coastal structures, Marine Geotechnical engineering, Geology of Ocean bottom, Theory of structures, Port planning, Design of RC structures, marine foundations and steel structures, Offshore Structural Analysis, Sediment transport, Ocean pollution and environmental engineering, Design of Offshore pipelines and Project Management. In addition to this the students have to carry out practical studies in the Labs. By this way the students are fully equipped to face any challenges by the Industry. Coastal and ocean engineering is the application of basic engineering principles to the analysis, design, construction and management of systems that operate in the ocean environment. It is a hybrid technical area utilizing techniques from many branches of engineering. Typical coastal and ocean engineering application areas include: beach protection and nourishment, coastal structures, coastal erosion, development of ocean energy resources, instrumentation for coastal and offshore measurements, marine dredging and dredged material placement, moored and towed systems, ocean mining, offshore petroleum recovery, offshore structures, ports and harbors, search and salvage, suspended and dissolved constituent transport, subsea pipelines and cables, submersible vehicles, and underwater acoustics. Lots of opportunities are available for Coastal and ocean engineers in the above mentioned areas across the world. Also these engineers can work in research institutes such as National Institute of Oceanography, National Institute of Ocean Technology. These engineers work in Major and Minor Ports, Fishing Harbors, Shipping Corporation of India and Oil and Natural Gas Commission.
